What kind of leak could make a house smell like spray paint?

I came home from work and my house has a very strong unnatural smell to it that smells similar to spray paint. We thought it might be a freon leak, but I heard that was odorless. My landlord thinks it's kerosene, but I have no clue how kerosene could have gotten into my house or where it could have come from. Any ideas or advice??
