An 80's/90's Robot Japanimation cartoon?

I'm looking for the name of a cartoon i used to watch in the 90's. Its of Japanese origin, so it may be of 80's origin (always took longer for America to get the good stuff!). This guy used some kind of crystal to transform himself into this Starscream-like robot that can fly like a plane and walk around. The cartoon was located in space most of the time, fighting a multitude of alien robot technology. They always ended the show on a cliffhanger until next week. Please help, i'm combing comic book stores and Anime "experts" in NYC who have no idea what i'm talking about! Lol
